AI Usage at Georgetown College

Framework for the Ethical and Responsible Uses of AI at Georgetown College

The academic integrity of GC depends on the community of scholars abiding by an agreed set of values.  GC prepares our students to make a positive difference in the world which requires them critically think about complex issues such as Artificial Intelligence (AI).  While we acknowledge that AI may enhance their education, we will strive to help them understand their intrinsic motivations for learning as well as demonstrate how best to use AI.

Responsibilities of the Faculty

  • Transparency in our use of AI; model best practices
  • Set clear expectations in each course about how students are allowed to use or not to use AI
  • Consider the discipline and level of the course; English vs Chemistry; 100 level vs 400 level – helping students understand why your assignments either allow AI or not allow AI; we should aim to help them navigate the temptations and limitations of AI

Responsibilities of Students

  • Adhere to the academic policies about AI usage in each class
  • Cite when AI is used
  • If unsure of policy on AI, ask for clarification

AI Statements in Syllabus Guidelines

If you would like to include a specific policy related to AI in your course, here are some examples adapted from Bryant University:

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) POLICY – No Use

AI Writing tools are not permitted for any stage or phase of work in this class.  If you use these tools, your actions would be considered academically dishonest and a violation of the Georgetown College Honor System.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) POLICY – Some or All Use

(Example 1) During our class, we may use AI Writing tools such as ChatGPT.  You will be informed as to when, where, and how these tools are permitted to be used, along with guidance for attribution.  Any use outside of this permission constitutes a violation of the Georgetown College Honor System.

(Example 2) We recognize that there are a variety of AI programs such as ChatGPT available to assist students. AI programs are not a replacement for human creativity, originality, and critical thinking. Writing is a craft that you must develop over time to develop your own individual voice as a writer. However, within limited circumstances, and with proper attribution, AI programs may be used as a tool. Use of these programs without attribution for an assignment is considered a violation of the Georgetown College Honor System.

(Example 3) AI Writing tools such as ChatGPT are welcome in this class, provided that you cite when and how you use the tool.

Example of attribution language:

“The author generated this text in part with GPT-3, OpenAI’s large-scale language-generation model. Upon generating draft language, the author reviewed, edited, and revised the language to their own liking and takes ultimate responsibility for the content of this publication.”
